Hair has three basic layers. The inner most core is the medulla. Secondly is the cortex. The
medulla and cortex are the heart of the hair. It is where the colour and resilience of the hair lies.
The outer layer is the cuticle. The cuticle is the protective coating. The primary component of hair
is keratin. It also contains dead amino acids, primarily cystine. Keratin is a fibrous,
sulphur-containing protein. The protein is insoluble in most solvents. That means that hair is very
chemically durable. That is why it takes such powerful base chemicals to permanently change it.
Despite its durability it is damaged with repeated onslaughts of styling abuse. Once the outer
layer of the hair, the cuticle, is severely damaged, there is very limited help available. Hydrolysed
human hair Keratin protein is the best penetrating, reconstructing substance available. Short of
that the damaged length must be cut off to improve the looks and manageability of your hair. Too
much heat from blow dryers, curling irons and hot rollers, chemical damage from perms, color,
bleach, chemical relaxers and too much exposure to the sun, poor brushing and/or combing
habits does damage to your hair. Always brush or comb gently especially with wet hair. The
oldest and weakest parts of the hair are the ends. Frequent trimming helps prevent split ends
from splitting up to the newer hair. Your salon professional can give you more detailed advise on
breakage and the best products to use for the problem.

  • If you are suffering from damaged hair or hair loss, use a mild shampoo and a mild
    conditioner

  • Never use your nails while shampooing and conditioning instead use the pads of your
    fingers to massage your scalp.

  • I know this is going to be very hard but try avoiding hair straighteners, blowdrying, perms,
bleaching, dying, hot curling irons, very tight braiding. If any of this is completely unavoidable
then go to a professional to get it done.

  • Instead of roughly rubbing your hair with a towel try carefully dabbing it dry with a towel.
Rough towel drying can damage your hair and cause split ends

  • Never use a hard bristle brush

  • Wait for your hair to dry before brushing it as your hair is most delicate while it is wet and is
    vulnerable to hair breakage

  • When you are combing out your tangles, start at the end of your hair and work your way up

  • Use a spray leave-in conditioner daily. This will help prevent hair breakage and damage
    from the sun

  • Wear a hat while you are in the sun. Remember the sun is just as damaging to your hair as it
    is to your skin

  • After you finish a swim in the pool, use a clarifying shampoo whose main ingredients is E.D.
T.A. This will neutralize the chlorine

  • Try washing your hair no more than two times a week. By doing this you will be preventing
your hair of being stripped of its natural protective oils.

  • Don’t smoke!

  • Have your hair trimmed at least every 6 weeks

  • Exercise regularly

  • Drink a lot of water

  • Try to avoid anything that involves stress and depression

  • Be gentle with your hair, don’t roughly brush or comb while you are in a rush this may save
time but will cost you a lot of time and money in the long run

  • After you shampoo and condition your hair, rinse your hair thoroughly with icy cold water.
This will make your hair more shiny

  • To prevent static try putting some moisturizing cream onto your hair

  • Condition your hair regularly, conditioners provide a lot of moisture and will help diminish the
damage done to your hair daily

  • Another great way to prevent static is to apply a leave-in conditioner

  • On the weekends or in any spare time you have, dab in a little leave-in conditioner on the
ends and the frizzy parts of your hair and wrap your hair up in plastic to add that little bit of
    extra moisture

  • At night put on a phytocitrus mask to help repair the damage the sun has done to your hair
    during the day

  • If you don’t have any leave-in conditioner lying around the house and you are planning to
spend the day in the sun, try slapping a little sunscreen on your hair…it really does do the
    trick

  • Before you blow dry your hair, spray on some leave-in conditioner, then blowdry

  • Be sure to use an extra moisturizing shampoo and a little more conditioner during the hot
    summer months

  • While conditioning your hair, find a fine comb (head lice combs work best) and comb your
hair thoroughly while your conditioner is still in your hair

  • Apply sunflower oil onto your hair when your hair hasn't been washed and is still dry and
leave in for two hours. After two hours wash out the sunflower oil with shampoo. This will
bring back the moisture to you hair

  • Take a calcium supplement or drink 3 glasses of milk daily

  • After you perm your hair do not brush your hair! Instead comb your hair

  • Never use a rubber band on your hair as it causes hair breakage and split ends

  • Massage your head with a little oil that contains vitamin E, this will make you hair soft and
    shiny

  • Eat foods which contain vitamin C, B and E

  • Add as much iron and minerals into your daily meals as you can

  • While blow drying, never hold the hair dryer close to you hair and always make sure you are
not blowing directly to your hair

  • If you haven’t got any styling mousse or hair gel around the house, simply use a bit of
moisturizer instead. It does the same job as the styling mousse and hair gel and is also good
    for your hair

  • If your hair is extremely dry, oil your hair at least 3 times a week

  • Remember you hair needs vitamin E to shine

  • Eat as much fruit and veggies as you can! And try and cut down on all that candy!

  • Love your hair

  • Before you go to the beach or the pools, brush some conditioner through your hair to help
    protect it from any damage

For Long Hair

The biggest problem you face with having long hair is hair breakage. This usually results in fly
aways and split ends. When you have long hair you need to remember that you must be extra
careful with your hair. Don’t brush harshly, over dry, dye to often, bleach to often and always be
sure to trim your hair regularly. But other than all of this, long hair is beautiful when looked after.
Here are some handy tips on keeping your long hair looking picture perfect….

  • Detangle you hair before washing instead of after

  • When conditioning, concentrate on the ends

  • Either air dry your hair or wrap it up in a towel

  • If you want waves, braid your hair while it is wet

  • Look for a non alcohol hair spray, it will make the drying process much quicker

  • ALWAYS use a leave-in conditioner

  • Use only wide toothed combs

  • Never use a brush

  • Trim your own hair if you cant find a trustable hair dresser

  • If you decide to trim your own hair then put some leave-in conditioner on the ends to keep it
in place. This will make your trims easier and will also give you a professional looking cut

  • If you’re a mother of either a young toddler or a baby, be sure to tie your hair up in a bun or
braid it. This will stop the pulling temptation coming from your little angel and will also stop
your little angel from causing your hair to break

  • Don’t crash diet

  • How many times do I have to say this? DON’T SMOKE!

  • Don’t let your hair frustrate you, be patient and don’t give into a cut unless you are
absolutely positive that you want one or you have realized that long hair doesn't suit your
    face shape or your figure

  • When you are out in public and you have your hair down, count how many people are
admiring your hair, this will make you feel much more confident about your hair and will
brush out any negative thoughts you have of it

  • Ever heard that long hair is heavy? I bet you have, well its just a myth! Your scalp was
designed to support your hair at full length

  • Don’t believe anyone when they tell you that you cant do much with long hair! It’s not true!
There are hundreds of wonderful styles out there you could do with your hair. The only
reasons why they say this is because they are either jealous or they have realized it is
easier to style your hair when it is short and quickly come to the conclusion that you cant do
as many things with long hair as with short

  • Never bunch your hair up when you are washing it. Instead leave it hanging down and wash
it by stroking the shampoo through

  • Be sure there is nothing in your home that could harm your hair, such as, metal clips,
brushes with sharp bristles and be sure to tie your hair up when you are blowing out
candles, using the food processor/blender, on escalators, lawn equipment and other power
    tools

  • Be sure to thoroughly rinse out your conditioner

  • Try not to wash your hair in water that is much over the warm mark. If possible wash your
    hair in cold water

The best way to brush your hair is to; bend forward and allow your hair to fall in front of you and
using a oval brush, brush your hair from the nape of your neck down toward the end. Stand
normally allowing your hair to set naturally and brush your hair from the underside of the hairline
to the ends. Then brush the top layers with long even strokes meanwhile smoothing your hair
with your hands to prevent static.

The best way to comb your hair is to separate your hair into small sections and using a wide
toothcomb, comb your hair starting with your ends working your way down.
